Abstract

Nowadays, researchers are interested in using the material at nanoscales as one of asphalt binder modifier. In this paper, Malaysian asphalt binder was modified with nanoclay and warm asphalt additives (WAA) and tested to determine the physical properties and storage stability. The results of the investigation indicated that the modified asphalt binders were stable in term of storage and they also have potential to improve physical properties of asphalts such as increasing softening point and decreasing the penetration. In addition, there was a significant reduction of temperature for mixing and compaction of asphalt mixtures.

Abstract

Purpose

In order to determine the range of medium temperature zone of road asphalt, it is hoped that the evolution of viscoelastic characteristics of road asphalt under medium temperature state can be deeply explored.

Design/methodology/approach

In this paper, the needle penetration test and temperature scanning test were designed for 90# and 70# bitumen as test materials, and the boundary of medium temperature zone of 90# and 70# bitumen was accurately determined by data analysis method. A mathematical model was established based on principal component analysis, and a comprehensive evaluation index was proposed to evaluate the evolution of temperature viscoelastic characteristics of road asphalt by means of standardization and rotational dimensionality reduction.

Findings

The test results show that the medium temperature zone of 90# asphalt is [−5 ± 1°C, 38 ± 1°C], and the medium temperature zone of 70# asphalt is [0 ± 1°C, 51 ± 1°C]. According to the viscoelastic response of road asphalt in the medium temperature zone, the medium temperature zone can be divided into three evolution stages: weak viscoelastic stage, viscoelastic equilibrium stage, strong viscoelastic weak stage. Analysis based on the intrinsic viscosity fillip target describing the various intrinsic viscoelastic index represents the viscoelastic properties of bitumen from different angles, and limitations inherent stick fillip for target put forward the integrated the inherent stick fillip mark information, as well as targeted and accurate evaluation of road asphalt temperature comprehensive evaluation indexes in the evolution of the viscoelastic properties of IM-T. Finally, the temperature data of asphalt pavement in several representative regions of China are compared with the determined medium temperature region, and it is proved that the research on the evolution of viscoelastic characteristics of asphalt pavement under the medium temperature condition has important practical significance.

Originality/value

The boundary of medium temperature zone of 90# and 70# base asphalt was determined, and the viscoelastic characteristic evolution of road asphalt under medium temperature state was studied deeply. Aiming at the limitation of intrinsic viscoelastic index, a comprehensive evaluation index IM-T which not only integrates the information of intrinsic viscoelastic index but also can accurately evaluate the evolution of temperature viscoelastic characteristics in road asphalt is proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

The study contributes to the aim of regional development policy in reducing regional disparities, by examining the spatial balance in socioeconomic development across the states of Malaysia based on composite development index (CDI). Besides, the study has attempted to understand the issues in the development gaps across Malaysian states by evaluating the factors that explain the variation in economic growth

Design/methodology/approach

This study uses three-stage least squares (3SLS) and bootstrap sampling and estimation techniques to examine the factors that explain the variations in the growth of development across the states in Malaysia. The analysis involves 13 states in Malaysia (Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Perlis, Selangor, Kedah, Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah and Sarawak) from 2005 to 2015.

Findings

The pattern in the spatial socioeconomic imbalance demonstrates a decreasing trend. However, the development index reveals that the performance of less developed states remained behind that of the developed states. The significant factors in explaining the variation in growth across the Malaysian states are relating to agriculture, manufacturing, human capital, population growth, Chinese ethnicity, institutional factors and natural resources.

Research limitations/implications

The authors focused on Malaysian states over the period between 2005 and 2015. The authors encountered some limitations in obtaining relevant data such as international factors and technological change that might also explain the variation in economic growth as the data on these variables are not reported at the state level. Moreover, the data on GSDP by sector was only available from the year 2005. Second, the study is based on secondary data. Future studies might examine the factors that contribute to the development gap across Malaysian states through interviews or questionnaires and compare the findings with the existing results. Despite its limitations, this study contributes to the existing literature that emphasizes on spatial balance of socioeconomic in a developing country, focusing on Malaysian states.

Practical implications

These findings provide guidance for policymakers by understanding key potential areas to reduce the disparity in economic growth across Malaysian states by understanding their impact on the growth.

Originality/value

This study employs different method of 3SLS and bootstrap sampling and estimation techniques in examining the factors that explain the variations in the growth of development across the states in Malaysia.

Abstract

Purpose

Due to its impact on business performance total quality management (TQM) has gained a lot of importance by businessmen, managers, practitioners, and research scholars over the last 20 years. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to critically assess the literature on TQM and find out the areas where future research is required.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve this purpose the articles published in the last 20 years were studied in a systematic way and a snapshot of the same was prepared in the tabular format with points such as year and journal of publication, application and country, statistical method used, and findings of the study such as practices and impact of TQM. After identifying the practices and impact of TQM a quality tool “Pareto Analysis” was applied on them for development of the model.

Findings

The findings provide the practices of TQM and its impact on the performance of a business. The gaps from the literature have been identified and areas for future research have been suggested. On the basis of the findings a generalized framework of TQM has been suggested which can be applicable irrespective of the sector.

Practical implications

The research will help academicians and future researchers to have a clear understanding of TQM in different rosters.

Originality/value

Ample literature is available on TQM but in the best knowledge of authors no study has taken place to integrate the reviews and findings of 102 research papers of the last two decades.
